Joni Young

CPSM, Managing Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP

The work we do has saved hundreds of millions of dollars and reduced risk for companies experiencing a merger, acquisition or divestiture.

Where were you born?

New York, NY

Provide any interesting personal background that shaped your early career

I have one sibling, an older brother who tests as “Genius”. Between that and the fact that I grew up at a time when women were mostly “housewives”, all of the attention was focused on his success. My parents did not want me to feel inferior so they basically had low expectations for me. When I went off to college and was on my own, my personal drive kicked in. I finished my undergraduate and Master degrees both in a total of 4 years, graduating Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude, respectively.

What did you do before your current career or role?

I was Chief Procurement Officer, mostly in local governments for over 20 years.

Describe your current job.

I am a Managing Director at Deloitte Consulting leading contract services, mostly to support integrations and divestitures, but also more broadly for all contract review services. In order to facilitate this work, I led a team to review AI based technologies and, in 2014 Deloitte partnered with Diligence Engine (now Kira Systems) to license the software we have branded as the core technology of Deloitte’s Digital Intelligent Content Extraction solution (known as D-ICE).

Why did you get started doing this?

I had a long career in Procurement for local government when the world went global. I wanted a broader set of experiences and enjoy helping to improve corporate processes and reduce costs.

What’s your favorite thing about your work?

The work we do has saved hundreds of millions of dollars and reduced risk for companies experiencing a merger, acquisition or divestiture. Additionally, with D-ICE, we are able to provide even more data and more solutions than were previously possible or cost effective.

Describe a moment you are proudest of in your career.

I am fortunate in that my career is comprised of a number of proud moments. The first was when at age 22 when I was promoted into my first role in Procurement. I was the youngest and first woman to ever be appointed as a Deputy Commissioner for the City of Syracuse, NY.
